When the Republicans along with the Religious Right took on the marriage issue, I predicted it was the first of many steps. Once they denied any legality to gay relationships, the next step would be to deny them adoption, then deny them any parenting rights whatsover...which would then lead to denial of certain types of jobs, housing etc.

This from the great state of Indiana, the state where a Republican judge recently ruled that a Wiccan couple must raise their child in a mainstream religion. A glimpse of the future:

Bill to limit reproduction procedures for gays, singles dropped






INDIANAPOLIS -- A proposed bill that would prohibit gays, lesbians and single people in Indiana from using medical science to assist them in having a child has been dropped by its legislative sponsor.


State Sen. Patricia Miller, R-Indianapolis, issued a one-sentence statement Wednesday about her decision to drop the proposal.

"The issue has become more complex than anticipated and will be withdrawn from consideration by the Health Finance Commission," she said.

Miller said earlier this week that state law does not have regulations on assisted reproduction and should have similar requirements to adoption in Indiana.

But Betty Cockrum, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Indiana called it government intrusion.

"It feels pretty chilling," Cockrum said Tuesday.

Miller acknowledged when she proposed it that the legislation would be "enormously controversial."

Miller is chairwoman of the Health Finance Commission, a panel of lawmakers that was to vote Oct. 20 on whether to recommend the legislation to the full General Assembly.

The bill defined assisted reproduction as causing pregnancy by means other than sexual intercourse, including intrauterine insemination, donation of an egg, donation of an embryo, in vitro fertilization and transfer of an embryo, and sperm injection.

It then required "intended parents" to be married to each other and says an unmarried person may not be an intended parent.

A doctor could not begin an assisted reproduction technology procedure that may result in a child being born until the intended parents have received a certificate of satisfactory completion of an assessment required under the bill. The assessment is similar to what is required for infant adoption and would be conducted by a licensed child placing agency in Indiana.

The required information includes the fertility history of the parents, education and employment information, personality descriptions, verification of marital status, child care plans and criminal history checks. Description of the family lifestyle of the intended parents also is required, including participation in faith-based or church activities.

As I see it both parties suck and no longer represent common people. Republicans clearly have big-business, the religious reich, and elitist industrialists and the wealthy as their only concern. The democrats have moved so far to the left they may as well be called Socialists, they support "minority" demands of all stripes and colors simply to get their vote, they espouse an internationalist approach to foreign policy that benefits 3rd world nations far more than our own interests and they think taxing will cure all ills in an ever growing "nanny state". And at the same time there is a certain amount of cross over action wherein both parties engage in the same thing when it suits their immediate goals. This leaves the middle class, the working class citizens without a voice and no representation. The Republicans screw us to give it to their big money interests and the Democrats screw us to give to minorities and the rest of the world. Either way, we get screwed.

This is one of the things that shows why so many are against gay marraige to begin with. You cannot start a family without both sexes being involved. Even in a petri dish, you stoill need a little something from a man and a little something from a woman. You cant have a child without involving the opposite sex in some way. Just cant be done. No way, no how, it's just completely impossible.
As for the republicans only caring about big business, that's a bunch of bull. The tax cut helps the hourly workers of thisw nation as much as it helps anyone. It puts a few extra dollars in their pockets every week, which is what it was intended to do. This allows them to hopefully be able to take a bigger part in this consumer driven economy. The more they shop, eat out and do things, the more business there is and the more jobs there are. Those people in nturn will hopefully do the same thing and keep the cycle going.

One of my lasting memories of grad school was when one of my dorm mates announced to a group of us that it was his duty as a Christian to kill all fags. I was stunned, but I don't remember anyone else in the room batting an eye.

Yes, that opinion may be in the minority, but I personally know of two gay men who have been beaten to a pulp, one ended up on crutches.

We've got well known religious leaders who are influential in the Republican Party (ie Pat Robertson) who don't hesitate to blame catastrophes on gay people. While I've not heard Robertson spout about New Orleans, others have, ignoring the fact that the hurricane actually centered itself on Mississippi, demolishing the coastline of that state and destroying Trent Lott's home.

You figure if we've got religious conservatives believing gays are responsible for horrible catastrophes, hey, why not kill them?

The efforts of social conservatives to marginalize gay people are steps down the slippery slope. Ken Blackwell, a potential future governor of our state, compared gay people unfavorably to barnyard animals. Talk like that makes it all that much easier to take a ball bat to the head of a fag.
